A MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

The disciplines of chemistry, mathematics, physics and computer science are converging today on biology, each illuminating in novel ways the complex study of living organisms. Just add the prefix "bio," and a whole set of new disciplines takes form: Biophysics, biostatistics, biochemistry, biomathematics, bioinformatics, bioengineering...

One of the principal attractions of the life sciences is certainly the opportunity to discover and better understand the complex functioning and fascinating evolutionary adaptations of living organisms. Knowing that even in all its rich biodiversity, life shares certain fundamentals, students and researchers can build upon knowledge gained from observations in simple models such as yeast, fruit flies, nematodes, or mice to make progress on many fronts - including understanding the functioning of the brain and advancing the combat against cancer and infectious, systemic and neurodegenerative diseases. Accordingly, the advances in developmental and stem cell biology have improved our understanding of tissue formation, knowledge that is essential for the future of regenerative medicine.
